چکیده

We study methods for drawing trees with perfect angular resolution, i.e., with angles at each node v equal to 2π/d(v). We show: 1. Any unordered tree has a crossing-free straight-line drawing with perfect angular resolution and polynomial area. 2. There are ordered trees that require exponential area for any crossing-free straight-line drawing having perfect angular resolution. 3. Any ordered tree has a crossing-free Lombardi-style drawing (where each edge is represented by a circular arc) with perfect angular resolution and polynomial area. Thus, our results explore what is achievable with straight-line drawings and what more is achievable with Lombardi-style drawings, with respect to drawings of trees with perfect angular resolution. ∗A preliminary version of this paper appeared at the 18th International Symposium on Graph Drawing (GD’10) [10]. †Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Quinnipiac University, Hamden, CT, USA ‡Department of Computer Science, University of California, Irvine, California, USA §Department of Computer Science, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona, USA ¶Institute of Theoretical Informatics, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany 1 ar X iv :1 00 9. 05 81 v2 [ cs .C G ] 1 0 Se p 20 15

On Balloon Drawings of Rooted Trees

Among various styles of tree drawing reported in the literature, balloon drawing enjoys a desirable feature of displaying tree structures in a rather balanced fashion. Each subtree in the balloon drawing of a tree is enclosed in a circle. Along any path from the root node, the radius of each circle reflects the number of descendants associated with the root node of the subtree. In this paper, w...

Force-Directed Lombardi-Style Graph Drawing

A Lombardi drawing of a graph is defined as one in which vertices are represented as points, edges are represented as circular arcs between their endpoints, and every vertex has perfect angular resolution (angles between consecutive edges, as measured by the tangents to the circular arcs at the vertex, all have the same degree). We describe two algorithms that create “Lombardi-style” drawings (...

Proximity drawings in polynomial area and volume

We introduce a novel technique for drawing proximity graphs in polynomial area and volume. Previously known algorithms produce representations whose size increases exponentially with the size of the graph. This holds even when we restrict ourselves to binary trees. Our method is quite general and yields the first algorithms to construct (a) polynomial area weak Gabriel drawings of ternary trees...

Pinning Balloons with Perfect Angles and Optimal Area

We study the problem of arranging a set of n disks with prescribed radii on n rays emanating from the origin such that two neighboring rays are separated by an angle of 2π/n. The center of the disks have to lie on the rays, and no two disk centers are allowed to lie on the same ray. We require that the disks have disjoint interiors, and that for every ray the segment between the origin and the ...
